The membrane is based on a central core of pre-hydrated natural sodium bentonite, a clay mineral that is a volcanic ash, millions of years old, naturally occurring in the ground. In normal use it will out-live the structure or application to which it is applied. It has many properties that make it ideal for holding both water and contaminants as well as for the protection of structures from the ingress of liquid.

The natural sodium bentonite clay is pre-hydrated and vacuum extruded under a patented process to form a plasticine like consistency, which is manufactured with the addition of geotextile fabrics. The material is supplied in roll form to provide a simple method of waterproofing basements or holding water or other liquids in lagoons or waste deposits.
RAWMAT® HDB has a number of highly beneficial attributes. Firstly, the pre-hydrated clay is unaffected by contaminants present in either the ground or the liquid it is containing. The natural sodium bentonite in RAWMAT® HDB membranes and RAWSEAL® waterstops is pre-hydrated with a patented polymer solution which provides a permanent protection to the ionic fingerprint of the clay protecting it from exchange and subsequent breakdown in ground contaminants, a drawback widely associated with other bentonite systems.
As a result the RAWMAT® HDB will perform its function of providing a long term and highly effective waterproof barrier to the application in which it is used. RAWMAT® HDB provides an instant barrier to the passage of liquid due to the dense plasticine like consistency of the central clay core. It has the capacity to self heal if it is punctured.
This ‘intelligent’ system can therefore be nailed to concrete in structural waterproofing applications to meet BS8102 - Grade 4 Structures - without affecting its performance. These self-healing properties enable the membrane to withstand root penetration when used as the lining membrane to ponds, lakes and canals as an alternative to ‘plastic’ membranes or traditional puddle clay.
RAWMAT® HDB has the ability to self-seal punctures and consequently can be fixed with nails.
RAWMAT® HDB comes in rolls that allow it to be handled simply and easily, regardless of the application to which it is being applied. As the material is used in a variety of applications, its carrying and protective geotextile coverings are interchangeable dependent on the application to which it is being applied.
RAWMAT® HDB has numerous applications in Petrochemical Lining, Structural Waterproofing, Environmental Protection and Landscaping. In many such applications it is supported with the use of RAWSEAL® Waterstop.
